Occupation Safety Division.

The Occupation Division of the Saskatchewan Safety Council was formed in 1970 when the Saskatchewan Industrial Accident Prevention Society merged with the Saskatchewan Safety Council. The Occupation Division served as a forum for Safety Directors from various industries to meet and exchange ideas.

This Division focuses on meeting the safety needs of its members and industry, both on the and off the job. Its members develop safety strategies, safety and health training programs, presentations and workshops. Its membership consists of safety and health professionals from business, industry and other specialists.

Safety Programs

All workplaces would benefit by having an effective Occupational Health and Safety program. Current Saskatchewan legislation requires that all places of employment listed in table 7 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations with 10 or more employees have an Occupational Health and Safety program in place.

The amount of time required to develop and implement an effective safety program varies greatly from company to company. This service is offered on a contract basis; contact us for details.

Safety Audits

Safety audits are an important component of an Occupational health & Safety Program. If you require an external audit, the Council can provide an unbiased, confidential audit for you.

Industrial Safety Seminar

The Saskatchewan Safety Council’s 35th Annual Industrial Safety Seminar will take place on February 4, 5 & 6, 2008 at Centennial Auditorium in Saskatoon. The Seminar is one of western Canada’s premiere safety conferences and will feature approximately 24 educational sessions on a wide variety of safety topics of interest to any industry. The seminar also features one of the largest displays of safety products and equipment in western Canada with over 60 display booths.

Spring Training 2008

May 5 - 9, 2008. Courses will include Safety Awareness, Standard First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Defensive Driving, Grounds keeping Safety, Personal Protective Equipment, Safe Lifting, Introduction to Fire Extinguishers and more.

Introduction to Transportation of Dangerous Goods

Note: Additional site-specific training may be required to fully comply with TDG regulations. Regulations require that anyone handling, offering for transport or transporting dangerous goods be trained on those products. Since the number and type of products used vary greatly from location to location, pricing for site-specific training will be done on an individual basic.

As of August 15, 2002, new Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations (commonly known as the Clear Language Regulations) have taken effect. These new regulations will affect anyone offering for transport, transporting or handling dangerous goods.

This generic course will cover regulations/responsibilities, classifications, safety markings (labels & placards), documentation, dangerous occurrences and special requirements.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods/WHMIS Combined

Introduction to WHMIS

Note: Additional site-specific training may be required to fully comply with WHMIS regulations. Regulations require that anyone handling, offering for transport or transporting dangerous goods be trained on those products. Since the number and type of products used vary greatly from location to location, pricing for site-specific training will be done on an individual basis.

Canada-wide regulations require that anyone working with or in the vicinity of materials classified under WHMIS regulations must have training. Our course will cover WHMIS Classifications, show workers how to interpret WHMIS labels and Material Safely Data Sheets. The course also covers legislation, symbols, responsibilities and more.

WHMIS Instructor Course

This course is available to people interested in conducting WHMIS training in their own workplace. Participants learn how to implement a WHMIS program, discuss legislation, cover the basics of job instruction techniques and adult education and practice giving a WHMIS presentation.

Forklift Instructor

Our Lift Truck Instructor Training course is designed to give participants the necessary knowledge and skills to train lift truck operators in their own workplace. The course covers the topics in the Safe Lift Truck Operator's course in greater detail. Also covered are job instruction techniques, coaching techniques, documentation, CSA Standards, Sask. Labour's guidelines for safe lift truck operation & course standards. Each participant is required to individually qualify on the lift truck (if not previously qualified) and do 3 presentations.

Safe Lifting Techniques

Manual material handling and lifting is a major source of injuries in many workplaces. This introductory level program highlights the importance of workplace design (ergonomics), an introduction to back & repetitive strain injuries, safe lifting techniques and the importance of fitness and exercise. The course includes lectures, demon stations and participant practice of safe lifting techniques.

New Pyrosoft® Fire Extinguishers Simulator

The Saskatchewan Safety Council has been offering fire extinguisher training since 1981. We offer a variety of training programs, some of which can be customized to meet your organization's needs.

In 2005/2006, the Safety Council will be offering a number of our fire extinguisher courses using the Pyrosoft® Fire Extinguisher Simulator that was featured at the 2005 Industrial Safety Seminar. The simulator offers the advantages of safer, more environmentally friendly and less expensive training than live fire training. It can also be offered at any time of year and in any weather since training is done indoors.

Introduction to Fire Extinguishers

This classroom session is a basic introduction to emergency plans, the elements of fire, fire classifications, types of extinguishers, operation of extinguishers, inspection and ratings.

Floor Warden Training

This course is developed specifically for people responsible for fire safety and building evacuations. The course concentrates on fire safety, building evacuations and includes an introduction to fire extinguishers. The course can be delivered at our facility or on site and can be delivered with or without hands on training (some restrictions apply and live fires may not be permitted in your area). Firefighting with Hand Portables

This course is an expanded version of Introduction to Fire Extinguishers and also includes hands on training with hand portable extinguishers on a liquid fuel fire(s). Course length and content can be varied to suit your needs. This course involves live fire evolutions and can be offered at our facilities or on site (some restrictions apply and live fires may not be permitted in your area). Fire Control School

Learn about fire behavior & classification, hardware & agents, inspection, recharge & maintenance, equipment capabilities & limitations and more. through classroom training and live fire evolutions, participants will learn how to approach, control and extinguish fires.

Participants will attempt to extinguish approximately 10 fires each, including liquid fuel and either propane or natural gas fires (depending on the school you choose). The course also includes a Class A fire demonstration and a demonstration of carbon dioxide and AFFF foam extinguishers. This 2-day school is currently available only in Regina (see courses above for on site training).

First Aid & CPR

The Council offers a wide variety of first aid and CPR training courses. Courses range from ½ day introductory level courses to 2 ½ day Occupational Health & Safety Class A programs. Training is delivered using the including lectures, workbooks, videos and hands on exercises & scenarios.

Certification is available through a variety of national agencies including St. John Ambulance, the Canadian Red Cross and the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Courses can be delivered at our facility or at your location if you have a suitable training room available. NOTE: Some prices are based on a minimum number of participants. Basic Occupational Health & Safety

Occupational Health & Safety Representatives Training

Saskatchewan Occupational Health & Safety Regulations require that at places of employment where an Occupational Health & Safety Representative is designated, an employer shall insure that the representation receives training respecting the duties and functions of a representative,

This course is designed and approved by Saskatchewan Labour, Occupational Health and Safety Division. Topics covered include the duties and functions of an Occupational Health & Safety Representative, an overview of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, and principles of the internal responsibility system. Also covered are the fundamentals of Hazard identification, risk assessment and hazard control.

Accident Investigation

If we can't find the cause of accidents and near misses, our chances of preventing future incidents are small. The Accident Investigation course is designed to give participants the necessary skills to find the root cause of accidents and near misses. The course combines lectures, videos, group discussions and role-playing in a mock investigation. Topics covered include the purpose of investigations, legislation, securing the accident scene, information gathering, interviewing witnesses, accident analysis, finding the root cause and effective recommendations & reports.

Skidsmart Collision Avoidance

Motor vehicle collisions are still the number one cause of workplace fatalities. This program is specifically designed to teach participants how to avoid situations that cause skids and collisions and to teach them how to regain control of the vehicle in a skid situation.

The program is about 6 hours long (3 hours classroom and 3 hours in vehicle). The in-vehicle component is on actual ice conditions.

Topics include:

* Preparing your vehicle for winter
* Emergency procedures
* ABS braking vs. non-ABS
* Front wheel drive vs. rear wheel drive
* Stopping distances
* Types of skids
* Types of tires & treads

In-vehicle training includes:

* Various full brake applications
* Steering exercises
* Collision avoidance exercises

The course will be offered in Regina and Saskatoon in early December 2003. On site courses will also be offered if you have sufficient number of participants and a suitable training area.

Skid Steer Loader Operator

Anyone operating a skid-steer loader must be adequately trained. The Skid Steer Loader Operator course covers the principles of operation, mounting/discounting, pre-shift inspection, site inspection, working with loads, excavating, levelling loose materials and transporting. Please note that his course covers skid steer loaders with only buckets and forks at this time and does not cover back hoes, augers and other attachments.

Snowmobile Safety

This program promotes the safe and responsible use of snowmobiles. The course includes classroom s well as hands on training. Topics include: rules of the road, relevant occupational health & safety regulations, pre-shift inspection, safe operating procedures, survival, ice safety and more. This course is aimed specifically at hose using snowmobiles as part of their occupation.

Variable Reach Material Handler

This course is offered as an addition to our Forklift Operator course and covers topics specific to Variable Reach Material Handlers. Topics will include principles of operation, parts of the material handler, pre-shift inspection, reading load charts and load handling.

Workzone Traffic Accommodation Supervisor

This course covers the minimum safety standards that must be met in highway work zones as designated by Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's "Traffic Control Devices for Work Zones" (Module1) and "Specifications 8400" (Module 2).

When combined with the Flag person Trainer's Course (Module 3), the participant receives the Work Zone Traffic Accommodation Supervisor's Certificate as designated by Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation.
