Powered Mobile Equipment Training

OPERATOR TRAINING

Occupational Health & Safety Regulations require employers to ensure that “only trained and competent operators are required or permitted to operate powered mobile equipment” and that the training meets specific requirements.  (Table 14.1 of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations).  The Saskatchewan Safety Council offers courses on a variety of powered mobile equipment including forklifts, variable reach material handlers, personnel lift platforms, skid steer loaders, agricultural tractors, all terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.  The courses consist of classroom lectures, workbook components and video sessions, as well as individual coaching on the equipment.  Student to instructor ratio is 5:1 and no recertification is required for operators unless otherwise noted.

Classroom topics include:

  • Legal requirements
  • Types of powered mobile equipment
  • Parts of the equipment
  • Safe operating procedures
  • Pre-shift inspections

 Practical training includes:

  • Pre-shift inspection
  • Loading and unloading procedures
  • Operating equipment loaded and unloaded
  • Attachements and accessories
  • Safety procedures

Occupational Health & Safety Regulations require a minimum of 16 hours combined theory and practical training.  The Saskatchewan Safety Council will provide all of the necessary training or assist employers to comply with these regulations.
