The Saskatchewan Safety Council's Traffic Division develops positions, programs and activities that relate to traffic collision prevention and reductions in traffic deaths, injuries and property damage Division programs include defensive driving, motorcycle safety, seat belts and child restraints, pedestrian safety, snowmobile safety, and school bus safety.

Air Brake Refresher Course

The Air Brake Refresher Course is designed to provide operators with an opportunity to refresh their knowledge with regard to the air brake system used in commercial vehicles. The course enables operators to update their skills and enhances their ability to perform the required pre-trip air test; obtain a better understanding of the air system components, and preventative maintenance to the system and to meet legal requirements of a commercial operator

Content:

  • Overview of the air brake system and basic components
  • Identification of the supply (wet) system, secondary and the primary system
  • Potential trouble-shooting of the system
  • Full pre-trip check of the complete braking systems
  • Procedure for adjustment of the manual slack adjusters
  • Explanation for operation of the automatic slack adjusters
  • Emergency procedure for the adjustment of the automatic slack adjuster

Community Traffic Safety Program

Through a grant from SGI, this program works closely with communities to improve traffic safety. The program is provincial and provides guidance and assistance to communities to increase awareness of traffic safety through school presentations (K-12) on a variety of traffic related topics, interactive displays at conferences, health fairs and other community events. The program administrator is also the provincial contact for child passenger safety. The Council is the leading agency when a community is interested in holding a child restraint clinic.

Defensive Driving Course (DDC)

Did you know that 1 out of 2 people will be involved in a traffic collision in his/her lifetime? About 85% of all traffic collisions could be prevented if drivers knew collision avoidance techniques and used them.

You can learn these techniques through the Council's Defensive Driving Course (DDC). DDC is an established, proven program that meets the need for today's complex traffic environment. Course content includes: case studies and written exercises, interactive class discussion, and specific techniques to avoid all types of traffic collisions despite the actions of other drivers. Courses are held in classroom at our office or scheduled on-site at your convenience.

Green Defensive Driving Course (Online)

The Green Defensive Driving Course online aims at helping you become a safer and greener driver. This course, modeled on the Canada Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course, provides an opportunity to learn: what is involved in driving defensively; why and how various types of motor vehicle collisions occur; what it takes to prevent thm; and how to reduce the environmental impact of driving.

The course consists of interactive learning activities, including collision scenes, driving techniques and driving scenarios; review quizzes at the end of each module; and a final test of 30 multiple choice questions.

Note: Participants have 30 days to complete the course and unlimited access to the course's support website. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate from the Canada Safety Council.

Defensive Driving for 15 Passenger Vans

This course is designed to provide drivers with an overview of safety concerns related to 15-passenger vans as well as defensive driving tips to make sure that every trip is a safe trip. The 15-passenger van course is a must for any business that transports employees in large vans. The Saskatchewan Safety Council is also able to offer an in-vehicle training component to the course if required.

Driving Assessment (In Vehicle)

In addition to the primary job responsibilities carried out by your employees, driving a vehicle is a responsibility that is often overlooked. As vehicle operators, your employees perform a public relations function for your firm, one that can positively - or negatively - reflect your company image.

Assessments can include one-on-one driver evaluations and instructor critique in defensive driving, collision avoidance, skid control, and other programs. The Council's highly qualified driving instructors are available to assist your firm with a safe driving program.

55 Alive

55Alive is designed to help seniors refresh their driving skills and keep them driving safely for as long as possible. Courses are held in classroom. There are no examinations and licensing is not affected. Course content includes: self-evaluation of driving abilities, the aging process as it affects driving, compensating for changes in age, and adapting to road and weather conditions.

Introduction to Motorcycling

Introduction to Motorcycling is a 6- 8-hour course designed for individuals who have NO experience operating a motorcycle and would like to experience the very basics of operating a motorcycle.

Our program introduces the sport of motorcycle riding in a non-threatening and relaxed environment. The smaller class size means that riders have more contact with the instructors and more time to practice basic skills such as balance, clutch control and slow speed maneuvers.

The cost for the program is $160.00 plus GST.

Motorcycle Training

This 21-hour program is designed to help prepare you to ride a motorcycle in a traffic environment.

Bikes are provided for you to learn on. Our instructors are highly experienced riders and qualified trainers in motorcycle safety.

The cost for the program is $350.00 plus GST.

Motorcycle Licensing

The Saskatchewan Safety Council offers “M” endorsement testing for students who successfully complete the Gearing Up course. Please contact the Saskatchewan Safety Council at (306) 757 3197 for costs, dates and times.

Mandatory equipment for Students

You will need the following equipment:
- Approved helmet (DOT, SNELL, CSA)
- Over the ankle boots (workboots, hikers)
- Goggles, face shield or approved glasses
- Riding jacket or jean jacket
- Jeans or motorcycle pants
- Full finger tight fitting gloves
- Rain jacket and pants (optional but recommended)

Course Rules

The Saskatchewan Safety Council will absorb the cost of accidental damage to our motorcycles but damage costs resulting from deliberate misuse of the motorcycle will be invoiced to the student.

Riders must have appropriate riding gear each day. If you show up without correct gear and none can be borrowed - YOU WILL NOT RIDE!

Your safety during training is of top priority and we will strictly enforce our safety rules.

Course Objectives

To help you develop control skills and riding techniques adequate for the demands of urban traffic.

To ensure that you are aware of your own limitations in skill, knowledge, and physical abilities, relative to the demands of motorcycling.

To develop an understanding of the hazards and problems which motorcyclists face and how to deal with them.

To provide information to help you purchase clothing, helmets, motorcycles and other equipment.

To provide the skills and knowledge required to pass the road test.

Your safety during training is of top priority and we will strictly enforce our safety rules.
Students may be asked to leave the class for disruptive, dangerous or for safety reasons.

Hints

The course continues no matter what the weather conditions, so we suggest that you bring a change of clothes and foul weather riding gear.

Lunch is not provided, so be prepared to go elsewhere for lunch or pack a lunch.

Water is available at the site, but you might want to bring your own.

We have dirt bikes and cruiser bikes from Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki and Kawasaki.

Operation Lifesaver

Operation Lifesaver is an on-going national public awareness program which focuses on educating the public about the dangers of crossing railway tracks and trespassing on rail property. The Council also works with other interested groups that wish to reduce the number of deaths and injuries as a result of railway crossing incidents. A speakers bureau, videos, brochures, posters and activity books are all available.

Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC)

The PDIC course is designed especially for professional drivers with the
objective of improving their defensive driving techniques. The program also
covers collision avoidance, safe vehicle maintenance, inspection tips and
more. The instructor course is designed to people to want to teach PDIC to
co-workers.

PDIC/DDC Instructor Course

This 3-day course, depending on numbers, is available if your staff member wishes to become certified to teach PDIC or DDC to co-workers.

School Bus Driver Training

This course covers all aspects of driving a school bus. There are 5 sessions from which to choose: professional driving skills, driving a school bus safely, introductory first aid, introductory CPR, and introduction to fire extinguishers. Designed for the novice or experienced driver who wishes to update his/her skills. This course does not affect licensing.

Length: 4 hours per session

Skidsmart Collision Avoidance

Motor vehicle collisions are still the number one cause of workplace fatalities. This program is specifically designed to teach participants how to avoid situations that cause skids and collisions and teach them how to regain control of the vehicle in skid situation. The program is about 6 hours long (3 hours classroom and 3 hours in vehicle).

Topics include:

* Preparing your vehicle for winter
* Emergency procedures
* ABS brakes vs. non-ABS
* Front wheel drive vs. rear wheel drive
* Stopping distances
* Types of skids
* Types of tires & treads

In-vehicle training includes:

* Various full brake applications
* Steering exercises
* Collision avoidance exercises

On site courses will also be offered if you have sufficient number of participants and a suitable training area.

Snowmobile Safety Training

All snowmobile operators who were born on or after January 1, 1989 are now required to complete a snowmobile safety-training course before operating a snowmobileon public land. (You must be at least 12 years old to enrol in a snowmobile course).

This program promotes the safe responsible use of snowmobiles. It involves classroom instruction and hands-on training. Topics include rules of the road, pre-start safety check, safe operating procedures, trail riding, survival and ice safety. This course is arranged on-site with minimum numbers. Parents and other adults are encouraged to enroll as well.

Length: 8 hours
Cost: SSC Member $70 + SSC GST per person / Non-member $145 + GST per family

Trailering Safety

The Saskatchewan Safety Council's Trailering Safety course is designed to provide the operator with information on towing a trailer safely and properly. Each participant will use their own vehicle as well as trailer.

Winter Survival

Would you know what to do if you became stranded in winter? Find out in advance? This course is designed for anyone who travels a lot in the winter. It covers vehicle preparation, winter driving techniques, introduction to hypothermia, survival gear and emergency procedures.

Length: 3.5 hours
Cost: SSC Member $45 + GST / Non-member $55 + GST

Winter Survival Kit

Saskatchewan winters can be hazardous for motorists. Be prepared - include a survival kit in your winter travel plans.

Kit contents: cup-a-soup, hot chocolate, coffee, nutrition bars, tea bags, sugar, 48-hour candle, matches, can opener, cooking container, plastic bags, spoons, winter motoring manual, bandaids.
