The Saskatchewan Safety Council's Traffic Division develops positions, programs and activities that relate to traffic collision prevention and reductions in traffic deaths, injuries and property damage Division programs include defensive driving, motorcycle safety, seat belts and child restraints, pedestrian safety, snowmobile safety, and school bus safety.

The Air Brake Refresher Course is designed to provide operators with an opportunity to refresh their knowledge with regard to the air brake system used in commercial vehicles. The course enables operators to update their skills and enhances their ability to perform the required pre-trip air test; obtain a better understanding of the air system components, and preventative maintenance to the system and to meet legal requirements of a commercial operator
Content:
- Overview of the air brake system and basic components
- Identification of the supply (wet) system, secondary and the primary system
- Potential trouble-shooting of the system
- Full pre-trip check of the complete braking systems
- Procedure for adjustment of the manual slack adjusters
- Explanation for operation of the automatic slack adjusters
- Emergency procedure for the adjustment of the automatic slack adjuster

Did you know that 1 out of 2 people will be involved in a traffic collision in his/her lifetime? About 85% of all traffic collisions could be prevented if drivers knew collision avoidance techniques and used them.
You can learn these techniques through the Council's Defensive Driving Course (DDC). DDC is an established, proven program that meets the need for today's complex traffic environment. Course content includes: case studies and written exercises, interactive class discussion, and specific techniques to avoid all types of traffic collisions despite the actions of other drivers. Courses are held in classroom at our office or scheduled on-site at your convenience.

This course is designed to provide drivers with an overview of safety concerns related to 15-passenger vans as well as defensive driving tips to make sure that every trip is a safe trip. The 15-passenger van course is a must for any business that transports employees in large vans. The Saskatchewan Safety Council is also able to offer an in-vehicle training component to the course if required.

In addition to the primary job responsibilities carried out by your employees, driving a vehicle is a responsibility that is often overlooked. As vehicle operators, your employees perform a public relations function for your firm, one that can positively - or negatively - reflect your company image.
Assessments can include one-on-one driver evaluations and instructor critique in defensive driving, collision avoidance, skid control, and other programs. The Council's highly qualified driving instructors are available to assist your firm with a safe driving program.
Cost: $60 per hour + GST
55Alive is designed to help seniors refresh their driving skills and keep them driving safely for as long as possible. Courses are held in classroom. There are no examinations and licensing is not affected. Course content includes: self-evaluation of driving abilities, the aging process as it affects driving, compensating for changes in age, and adapting to road and weather conditions.

The Saskatchewan Safety Council is pleased to offer two motorcycle safety courses:
1. MTP – Regular Course
This 20-hour program is designed to help prepare you to ride a motorcycle in a traffic environment. Here are

Motorcycles are provided for you to learn on. Our instructors are highly experienced riders and qualified trainers in motorcycle safety.
The cost for the program is $400.00 plus GST.
2. Group Riding and Practical Street Skills
This is an opportunity for riders that already have taken and passed the regular course and are currently riding
on the street with their own motorcycle. Students will receive constant constructive feedback from the
instructor, by radio, about their riding when on the street. This class is 4 hours long which includes about 1
hour of classroom time and 3 hours of group riding. Class size is small with 3 riders for each instructor.
Students must supply their own street legal motorcycle.
The class will cover:
- Group riding dynamics
- Street riding skills review
- Student concerns and questions on SGI Class 6 Endorsement
- Signals and shoulder checks
- Lane positioning and blocking
- One way streets, residential areas, multi lane roadways
The cost for the program is $80.00 plus GST.
The following information applies directly to the Regular 20 hour course.
Mandatory equipment for All Students
- An approved helmet (DOT, Snell, CSA, ANSI)
- Over the ankle boots (Hiking boots, Work boots, Motorcycle boots) High-top runners are not allowed.
- Safety glasses, Goggles or Face shield
- Motorcycle jacket or other heavy weight jean or leather jacket
- Full length pants or motorcycle pants and/or chaps
- Full finger, tight fitting leather gloves
- Rain jacket and pants (optional but highly recommended)
Tip: If you are not already riding, we suggest borrowing riding gear & wait until after completing
the course before making expensive purchases. Tips on what to buy will be given on the course.

Course Rules
- The Saskatchewan Safety Council will absorb the cost of accidental damage to our motorcycles but damage costs resulting from deliberate misuse of the motorcycle will be invoiced to the student.
- Riders must have appropriate riding gear each day. We will ride the first day. If you show up without correct gear - YOU WILL NOT RIDE!
- Riders that miss part of the course will not be allowed to continue
- Your safety and the safety of others during training are of top priority and we will strictly enforce our safety rules. Students may be asked to leave the class for disruptive, dangerous or for safety reasons.
Course Objectives
- To help you develop control skills and riding techniques adequate for the demands of urban traffic.
- To ensure that you are aware of your own limitations in skill, knowledge, and physical abilities, relative to the demands of motorcycling.
- To develop an understanding of the hazards and problems which motorcyclists face and how to deal with them.
- To provide information to help you purchase clothing, helmets, motorcycles and other equipment.
- To provide the skills and knowledge required to pass the road test and become an expert rider.
Hints
- The course continues no matter what the weather conditions, so we suggest that you bring a change of clothes and foul weather riding gear. We will ride even when raining.
- The course is physically demanding. You will be pushing a motorcycle with a rider in the initial stages.
- Lunch is not provided. For weekend courses bring a lunch and refreshments on Saturday and Sunday. Lunch time will a “working lunch” on site in the classroom.
- Water is available at the site, but you might want to bring your own.
Training Bikes
The Saskatchewan Motorcycle Training Program offers a variety of bikes. We have Dual Purpose, Cruiser and Sport bikes from Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Buell and range in size from 125cc to 500cc. We encourage students to try each of the different types of bikes. It is the one chance that you have to determine the style of motorcycle that may be best for you.
No matter what size you are or how much experience you have, our instructors can usually match you to a motorcycle fitted for your needs. Our lowest seat height is 25 inches.
Motorcycle Licensing
The Saskatchewan Safety Council offers “M” endorsement testing for students who successfully complete the MTP Regular Course. Call the office to book testing times. Testing will run from mid June to the end of September.

Operation Lifesaver is an on-going national public awareness program which focuses on educating the public about the dangers of crossing railway tracks and trespassing on rail property. The Council also works with other interested groups that wish to reduce the number of deaths and injuries as a result of railway crossing incidents.
The PDIC course is designed especially for professional drivers with the
objective of improving their defensive driving techniques. The program also
covers collision avoidance, safe vehicle maintenance, inspection tips and
more. The instructor course is designed to people to want to teach PDIC to
co-workers.
Length: 6 hours
Cost: SSC Member $120.00 + GST / Non-member $140.00 + GST
This 3-day course, depending on numbers, is available if your staff member wishes to become certified to teach PDIC or DDC to co-workers.
Cost: DDC Instructor Course $1370.00 + GST
PDIC Instructor Course $1370.00 + GST
This course covers all aspects of driving a school bus. There are 5 sessions from which to choose: professional driving skills, driving a school bus safely, introductory first aid, introductory CPR, and introduction to fire extinguishers. Designed for the novice or experienced driver who wishes to update his/her skills. This course does not affect licensing.
Length: 4 hours per session
Cost: SSC Member $65 + GST / Non-member $75 + GST
Motor vehicle collisions are still the number one cause of workplace fatalities. This program is specifically designed to teach participants how to avoid situations that cause skids and collisions and teach them how to regain control of the vehicle in skid situation. The program is about 6 hours long (3 hours classroom and 3 hours in vehicle).
Topics include:
* Preparing your vehicle for winter
* Emergency procedures
* ABS brakes vs. non-ABS
* Front wheel drive vs. rear wheel drive
* Stopping distances
* Types of skids
* Types of tires & treads
In-vehicle training includes:
* Various full brake applications
* Steering exercises
* Collision avoidance exercises
On site courses will also be offered if you have sufficient number of participants and a suitable training area.

All snowmobile operators who were born on or after January 1, 1989 are now required to complete a snowmobile safety-training course before operating a snowmobileon public land. (You must be at least 12 years old to enroll in a snowmobile course).
This program promotes the safe responsible use of snowmobiles. It involves classroom instruction and hands-on training. Topics include rules of the road, pre-start safety check, safe operating procedures, trail riding, survival and ice safety. This course is arranged on-site with minimum numbers. Parents and other adults are encouraged to enroll as well.
Length: 8 hours
Cost: SSC Member $70 + GST per person / Non-member $145 + GST per family
The Saskatchewan Safety Council's Trailering Safety course is designed to provide the operator with information on towing a trailer safely and properly. Each participant will use their own vehicle as well as trailer.

- Legal requirements of trailer towing
- Loading/unloading procedures
- Securing loads
- Vehicle control
- Defensive driving with a trailer
- Trailer hook ups
- Practical driving simulating normal driving conditions

Would you know what to do if you became stranded in winter? Find out in advance? This course is designed for anyone who travels a lot in the winter. It covers vehicle preparation, winter driving techniques, introduction to hypothermia, survival gear and emergency procedures.
Length: 3.5 hours

Saskatchewan winters can be hazardous for motorists. Be prepared - include a survival kit in your winter travel plans.
Kit contents: cup-a-soup, hot chocolate, coffee, nutrition bars, tea bags, sugar, 48-hour candle, matches, can opener, cooking container, plastic bags, spoons, winter motoring manual, bandaids.
