Respiratory hazards exist in every workplace, from bacteria to viruses, aerosols to odors and gases to dust. Often times, these hazards are considered uncontrollable and are ignored. However, prolonged and constant exposure can affect the health and safety of workers, resulting in both temporary and permanent physical damage. Knowledge of these hazards and the appropriate personal protective equipment is extremely important to those exposed to such hazardous conditions.
For most workers airborne hazards are treated as a common workplace risk. Exposures to respiratory hazards can cause chronic and acute lung diseases, allergic reactions, irritations, cancers and systemic poisonings of the major organs in the body. Where there is a risk of hazardous airborne substances or oxygen deficient atmosphere in the workplace approved respiratory protective devices must be worn. Respiratory equipment is probably the most important type of personal protective equipment available to workers who are exposed to hazardous conditions and atmospheres. Course Description:
