"It was a good thing I took the Winter Collision Avoidance course. I was driving into work last Thursday and I had to swerve for a moose on the highway coming in from Dundurn. The principals you taught were the same ones I had to put into action that morning. Much Appreciated" - Chris
If you drive in winter, you want to take this program. If you know someone who drives in winter, you want them to take this course.

The Saskatchewan Safety Council Winter Collision Avoidance program (formerly Skid Smart) has been updated. Now a made-in-Saskatchewan blended learning program that combines online learning with an
in-vehicle on-ice practical skills development session.

New for 2025 is the option to register for the online program only.
Course Description:
Focused mainly on collision avoidance with emphasis on winter conditions, the online program enhances the participant’s knowledge of vehicle equipment, driver decisions, and road conditions which may lead to collisions. It teaches the decision making abilities and skills required to both prevent skid situations and recover control of a vehicle which has entered an uncontrolled skid.

The online theory is delivered via our Learning Management System. Registered participants are provided plenty of lead-time to complete the online portion at their own pace using a PC, tablet or Smart-Phone.

The on-ice practical portion takes place in a controlled and safe area on our custom designed outdoor skid pad.

All registering participants must have a unique email address.
Topics Covered (Online):
  • Eye-Lead time and the “Safety Zone”
  • Target fixation
  • Effective braking
  • Winter driving and driver habits
  • Black ice
  • Avoiding a collision
  • Control Recovery
Topics Covered (Skid Pad):
  • Straight line emergency braking
  • Emergency braking before and after steering
  • How vehicle speed affects stopping distances
  • Controlling your vehicle around objects
  • Vehicle drifting
  • Challenging the driver's skills in emergency situations
  • Proper steering techniques and hand placement exercises
